The Cedar Mill Farmers Market has two Saturdays left in 2026, October 10 and October 17, at the corner of NW Cornell and Murray Roads. After that, the stalls are gone until spring. This year the corner doesn't go quiet with them. The low building on the north side of Cornell, which Cedar Mill knew for decades as a grocery and then as Miller Paint, is filling with new tenants. A furniture showroom opened in its east end in late August, and a sports bar is being built in its west end.
So the corner where the neighborhood bought groceries in 1947 has two things happening at once. One season of Saturday shopping is ending, and a building with a long retail history is starting a new one.
The building at 1026 NW Murray started as a grocery
The Cedar Mill News calls the former Miller Paint building "originally Joe's Market." The paper's history of the store traces how it got there:
- 1947. Joe's opens in a two-story building at the southeast corner of Murray and Cornell, sharing it with C&H Hardware. That building has since been torn down.
- By 1970. The store has moved into a newer building north of Cornell, the one later shared by Miller Paint and Papa John's Pizza.
- 1970. Store manager Bill Mineau and his partners Rick Dasso and Lynn Lovenguth buy the business from founder Joe Smith and rename it Ideal Market. Smith had been paying into an escrow account so his employees could buy him out when he retired.
- Most recently. Miller Paint was the last tenant before the current changes.
Neighbors who remembered Joe's told the paper it had butchers on staff, freezer space you could rent, and meat and produce bought from Hillsboro and Forest Grove. Lovenguth ran the butcher counter and did custom game cutting. One neighbor quoted in the piece said that even after Safeway opened, Smith "remodeled and expanded, and held his own."
That buy-local grocery is the background for both things now going on at this intersection.
Across the corner, the market finishes full
The farmers market says it has "a completely full market all the way through to our last day, October 17." Hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. The fall lineup includes winter squash for storing, apples for sauce, cider or crisp, the last heirloom tomatoes, and potatoes for stew. There's also hot chai, pour-over coffee, and kettle corn popped on site.
Two details matter for these final weekends. The market takes SNAP/EBT, and its Double Up Food Bucks program matches up to $20 a day in SNAP purchases. It also wants volunteers for 6:30 a.m. setup, and it describes the job as a way to be "the first to shop at the market." If you've been thinking about helping, October 10 and 17 are the last chances this year.
The east end is now a furniture showroom
What's New Furniture held its grand opening on Friday, August 28, in the east end of 1026 NW Murray Rd. It is the company's second store. The first is on NE Grand in Portland. The store's own page confirms the address and the east-end location. Earlier coverage gave 1040 NW Murray, but that number is wrong.
The store carries modern, mid-century, and Oregon-made furniture. That includes Stanton and Stylus custom sofas built in Oregon, with more than 200 fabrics to choose from. A Curated Consignment section sells vintage and mid-century pieces and gets new arrivals every week. Hours are 10 to 6 Monday through Saturday and 11 to 5 on Sunday, and the store delivers across the Portland metro and Washington County.
Owner Joey Patiño told the Cedar Mill News he appreciates "the neighborly spirit" and hopes to support local activities. Because the consignment stock turns over weekly, there's a reason to stop in more than once. That gives the corner a regular errand on weekdays and Sundays, which the Saturday-only market never did.
The west end is a sports bar under construction
As of the paper's August 31 report, Players Pub was under construction in the west end of the same building. The owner also runs a similar pub in Forest Grove. The paper couldn't reach the owner before press time and said it would have more in its October issue. That October issue wasn't yet in the paper's online archive in early October. The August report did not give an opening date.
The Forest Grove Players Pub is at 2834B Pacific Ave. It says it has been open since 2006 and started next to a Godfather's Pizza. If the Cedar Mill location follows that model, the building will have evening hours for the first time in years. Until the owner gives details, though, that is a reasonable guess based on the sister pub, not an announcement.
Timberland Center is changing too
A few new businesses this fall also landed at the Timberland Center on NW Lost Springs Terrace. Market of Choice, at 250 NW Lost Springs Terrace, has anchored the center since 2015. Great Notion's taproom is at 230, Suite 10, in the space Ava Roasteria used to occupy.
| Address on NW Lost Springs Terrace | Business | Status this fall |
|---|---|---|
| 230, Suite 14 | Dumont Creamery and Café | Listed at this address, open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily |
| 240, Unit 38A | Oregon State Credit Union, Cedar Mill branch | Open; grand opening held September 12 |
| 230, Suite 10 | Great Notion | Taproom in the former Ava Roasteria space |
| 250 | Market of Choice | In the center since 2015 |
Dumont sits next to Great Notion. The Cedar Mill News described it as an ice cream shop and café with espresso, sodas, fruit drinks, and Thai milk tea, plus seating for 20. The paper expected it to open in early September. Dumont's own site now lists the Cedar Mill address and daily hours. The credit union opened despite a July 10 car crash into its space, which the paper reported was not expected to delay its planned August soft opening.
The two locations don't overlap much. Timberland is a newer center built around a large grocery anchor. Cornell and Murray is an older corner whose original grocery building now holds a showroom and, soon, a pub. Between them, Cedar Mill's commercial life now runs on two separate streets.
Getting to the corner this fall takes planning
Road work affects anyone driving or biking to Cornell and Murray this season. Walker Road is closed between 174th Terrace and Cambray Street through December 1 for culvert replacement. Washington County is sending drivers to Cornell Road and cyclists to Autumn Ridge Drive. With that detour in place, Cornell is carrying extra traffic past the market and the Murray Road building for the rest of the season.
Farther south, the Walker Road and Murray Boulevard intersection project began April 20, 2026, and is expected to finish in fall 2028. The county's September 30 update said in-water work for the bridges was winding down and warned that bikes may share lanes with cars during construction. The Cedar Mill News reported that at least one lane is staying open in each direction. To the north, Cornelius Pass Road was reported closed through October while its 1946 Rock Creek bridge is replaced.
A longer-term proposal also centers on this area. A Cedar Mill Town Center Cornell Road–Saltzman Road transit access project appears in the 2027–2030 State Transportation Improvement Program. It describes better bus reliability and transit access along Cornell and Barnes, along with pedestrian and bicycle safety upgrades. It's a proposal in a funding program, not a construction schedule.
October at Cornell and Murray, and nearby

After October 17, the only regular Saturday reason to stop at this corner is the building across the street. Right now that means the furniture showroom, open 10 to 6, with the pub still under construction as of the paper's August 31 report.
